Survival Studies Institute

The Yard, Colorado Springs, CO, USA 2023

Home to the Peterson Space Force Base, Schriever Space Force Base, Cheyenne Mountain Space Force Station, U.S. Space Command, and Space Operations Command— Colorado Springs has the largest contingent of space service military installations in the world. Given this reality on the ground and in space, the Survival Studies Institute posits a series of propositions about what the future holds for one property at 1010 N. Logan Avenue, Colorado Springs, U.S.

Ver. 3 Design was based on a detailed description by Rob O’conner, a retired urban planner who has lived across the street from 1010 for many years. Rob wrote: “What I see (in 75 years) is the mountain backdrop denuded of trees, except for a thin fringe along timberline (10,000 to 11,000 feet elevation) Anything below that is a barren reddish-brown hue. (think the mountains above Las Vegas) with a few thin ribbons of green descending along the folds of the prominent drainages.  The sky is a cloudless white, glaring in it’s intensity. The 1010 property is treeless with a few cacti growing in front in rock and sand. The sand here is a reddish-brown color (decomposed granite mixed with sands from massive storms eons ago that brought it from the west over the mountains and deposited it to form the hill 1010 sits on); The house is wrapped in a thick 3-foot blanket of some sort of insulation material with a foil-like  exterior and cut outs for the recessed windows.  The widows themselves are smoked mirrors.  The roof is a solid solar panel. A large water tank (for hot water) is mounted on it peak. To one side of the structure is an door set in a frame at an angle, apparently an entrance leading underground.  That’s it.”
