5 Habitats (Independent School of Art)

New Langton Arts, SF, CA 2006

Curated by Joseph Del Pesco

Each day (over 5 days) the Independent School of Art recreated a different performance document photo from New Langton's early archives. We did not re-stage the entire performance referred to by the archival photo, but simply restaged the photographic image itself. In this way, the original photo document functioned as an intermediary point, marking the original performance and guiding our performance of image reproduction. During operating hours we used all and any means at our disposal, including props, sets, actors, wigs, lighting, make-up, and low budget special effects to faithfully reconstruct the original photographic images. In the end, the spectacle of our pursuit towards the replication of the performance document became a new performance in itself, the residue a daily sculpture.
